Northfield, Vt. - Chris Adams
(Bradford, N.H.) scored three goals and dished out a game-high four
assists to help lead Clark University to a 10-5 victory over
Norwich University in a Pilgrim League men's lacrosse game Saturday
afternoon at a windy and rainy Howard Field.
Clark (6-4, 2-1 Pilgrim) scored the first eight goals of the
second half to turn a 3-1 halftime deficit into a 9-3 lead early in
the fourth quarter.
Norwich seemed to be in control of the contest in the first half,
limiting Clark's offense to 12 shots and holding a 3-1 advantage at
the intermission. The Cougars exploded offensively in the third
quarter, however, outscoring the Cadets 4-0 to take over. Clark
then scored the first four goals of the fourth quarter to put
Norwich away.
Garrett McAdam (Portland, Maine) added three
goals for the Cougars, while Phil Winslow
(Providence, R.I.) chipped in one goal and one assist.
Chris Johnson (Amherst, Mass.), Shawn Roche (Centerport, N.Y.) and JC Tsagarakis (Stonington, Conn.) all scored one goal apiece
to round out the scoring for Clark.
Joe Galante led the way for Norwich (8-4, 1-2 Pilgrim) with three
goals and one assist. Jesse Mattson and Michael White each added
one goal apiece for the Cadets, who saw their five-game win streak
snapped. Kyle Marzeoti handed out one assist to complete the
scoring for NU.
Clark tallied the game's first marker when Winslow scored off a
feed from Adams at 6:53 of the first quarter. Norwich knotted the
score at 1-1 just two minutes later on Galantes first goal of
the contest.
The Cadets got second period goals from White and Galante to carry
a 3-1 edge into halftime.
NU goalkeeper Nathan Proctor stopped all five shots that he faced
in the second period to keep Clark off the scoreboard during the
stanza.
Goals by Roche and Tsagarakis within the first seven minutes of
the second half knotted the score at 3-3, and Adams' man-up marker
put the Cougars in front 4-3 with 7:01 remaining in the third
quarter.
McAdam made it 5-3 when he scored his first goal of the day with
5:58 to play in the third, and Clark took that two-goal lead into
the final 15 minutes.
McAdam and Adams scored within a span of 14 seconds early in the
fourth quarter to extend Clark's lead to 7-3, and Johnson and Adams
tallied markers within a span of eight seconds moments later to
help the Cougars to a 9-3 advantage. In all, Clark potted four
markers within a span of 1:01 thanks to several faceoff wins and
some excellent passing and shooting.
Norwich finally stemmed the tide with 6:51 to play as Mattson
scored an unassisted goal.
McAdam rounded out his hat trick exactly two minutes later, and
Galante completed his hat trick with 3:13 to play to cap the
scoring.
Clark outshot Norwich 38-23, and the Cougars won 12-of-18
faceoffs. CU went 2-for-7 on man-up opportunities, while NU was
0-for-3.
Clark goalkeeper Andrew DeVito (Glastonbury,
Conn.) stopped seven shots to earn the win between the pipes for
the Cougars. Proctor, meanwhile, made 12 saves in the losing effort
for the Cadets.
Norwich held a slim 37-36 edge in ground balls with Proctor
scooping up a game-high nine. DeVito and Kyle Klapp (Schenectady, N.Y.) led the Cougars with six ground
balls apiece.
