Softball Splits Opening Day with Victory Over Elms

-The Lead: The Clark University softball team went 1-1 in their opening day with a victory over Elms College and a setback to Kenyon College in Fort Myers, Fla. on Saturday afternoon. Senior Sami West (Gonic, N.H.) pitched a no-hitter in the Cougar's 1-0 victory over Elms.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Game #1: Clark 1, Elms 0

-West pitched a no-hitter in the season opener to lead the Cougars to their 1-0 victory over Elms. She earned an impressive 16 strikeouts and walked just three batters over seven innings pitched.

-The bottom of the second inning is when Clark stole the game from the Blazers. Senior Anjelica Gonzalez(Merrimack, N.H.) got things started in the second with a single. First year Isabella DiOrio (Lincoln, R.I.) moved her into scoring position with another base hit and West added a hit to load the bases with no outs. The Cougars got DiOrio across the plate when Jessica Urella (North Grafton, Mass.) took a pitch off the body and this was all they would need for the victory.

-Clark collected five hits with 1-for-2 performances from West, Bodin and Gonzalez.

-With the victory West improves to 1-0 on the season.

-Elm's pitcher, Lisa Lusardi (Enfield, Conn.) went six innings with two strikeouts, two walks and one earned run.

Game #2: Kenyon 6, Clark 0

-After three scoreless innings Kenyon heated up for six runs in the top of the fourth. Britny Patterson (Corona, Calif.) got the ball rolling with a base hit with one out. A fielding error by Clark allowed Keely Sweet (Glencoe, Mo.) to reach first and put Patterson in scoring position at second. Sophomore Lauren Graf (Allen Park, Mich.) earned the first RBI of the game to give the Ladies the 1-0 lead.

-After a strikeout from Clark's Brenna Foley (Charlton, Mass.), a double down the left field line from senior Nicole Horita (San Mateo, Calif.) scored Graf and Sweet for the 3-0 lead heading into the bottom of the fourth.

-The Ladies added another three runs in the top of the sixth inning. Senior Madi Maldonado (Chicago, Ill.) added an RBI when Grace Pitz (Fox River Grove, Ill.) crossed home plate and a double from freshman Grace Finn (Escondido, Calif.) scored Maldonado and Horita for the ultimate 6-0 victory.

-Clark posted four hits in the setback including a two-for-two effort from Foley. Foley took the loss on the mound going seven innings with five strikeouts, two walks, and four earned runs.

-Horita led Kenyon with a two-for-three day at the plate and two RBIs.

-Sweet earned the win for the Ladies and improves to 2-0 on the season while Foley falls to 0-1.
