Babson Downs Field Hockey in NEWMAC Action

-The Lead: The Clark University field hockey team suffered a setback to the Beavers of Babson College in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) action at home on Saturday afternoon. The Beavers sit at the top of the NEWMAC standing with a perfect 5-0 record.


-Just under two minutes into the game Babson got on the board when senior Catherine Gilman (Cohasset, Mass.) collected the ball in the circle, pulled to her right side and fired a shot to the bottom left corner (1-0).

-16 minutes later the visitors struck again. After a scuffle in front of the net the ball landed on the stick of first year Mille Brady (Far Hills, N.J.) who pushed the ball to the back of the net for the 2-0 lead.

-Clark picked up their offensive push and got on the board in the 22nd minute of play. Junior Mikayla Pantano (East Bridgewater, Mass.) carried the ball down the right side and crossed the ball to senior Olivia Barksdale (Fort Washington, Md.) at the top of the circle; Barksdale beat Babson's keeper one vs. one as the Cougars only trailed by one (2-1).

-The Beavers responded three minutes later when they capitalized on a corner play. Sophomore Maddy Paro (Manchester, Conn.) lifted a shot to the right post where Gilman was to tap it in (3-1).

-With 5:20 on the clock the Cougars saw another bid at a goal when sophomore Carden Maloney (Worcester, Mass.) dished the ball to Barksdale who deflected the ball up, but Babson keeper, Cassidy Riley (Catonsville, Md.) came out of the net and the ball brushed her pads and went out of bounds for the save.

-The Beavers were awarded one more corner with no time left in the first half but Clark's defense held strong and entered the break trailing by two (3-1)

-Just over four minutes into the second half Babson scored a fourth goal. Junior Tori Roche (Andover, Mass.) was posted up on the right post to sweep the ball into the right corner on a pass that came from Brady at the stroke mark.

-With 17:30 on the clock first year Quinn Greer (Providence, R.I.) tipped in a shot from Roche on the left post to extend Babson's lead to 5-1. Just one minute later the visitors scored on a corner play when senior Ashley Tango (Reading, Mass.) collected the insert and fired a shot to the right side for the ultimate 6-1 victory.


-Babson outshot Clark 50-6 (36-5 shots on goal).

-Senior Dani Michaud (Providence, R.I.) made an impressive 22 saves in net as she falls to an even 4-4 on the season. Sophomore Katie Crowley (Bolton, Mass.) came in for the final 10 minutes of play and made five stops for the Cougars.

-Riley made four saves in net for the Beavers and improves to 10-3 on the season.

-Babson was awarded 17 penalty corners while the Cougars were awarded just two.


-Clark is back home on Tuesday, October 9th when they host Lasell College in an out of conference contest at 4:00 p.m.

-Babson travels to the University of New England on the same day for some non-conference action at 5:00 p.m.
