DARTMOUTH, Mass. – The five-game winning streak of the Clark University field hockey team came to an end Tuesday night as UMass Dartmouth junior Desarai Melendez registered two goals to pilot the Corsairs to a 3-1 win against the Cougars at Cressy Field.
Score: Corsairs 3, Cougars 1
Records: Clark University (6-3) | UMass Dartmouth (2-4)
How it Happened:
The Cougars faced a deficit just 9:54 into the action as Melendez picked up her first of the night and of the season off a feed by teammate Kylie Dias. The Corsairs struck again two minutes later when Brittany Perry cashed in from ten yards out to give the host an early 2-0 advantage.
With 1:57 remaining in the first half, UMass Dartmouth closed out it's scoring for the night, and again it was Melendez responsible as the junior notched her second goal of the night off a deflection in front of the cage. The Cougars were able to shrink the gap in the final 14 seconds of regulation as junior Carden Maloney (Worcester, Mass.) scored her sixth marker of the season for the 3-1 final score.
Inside the Numbers:
- Maloney challenged the net throughout the night with a team-best seven shots while freshman Abigail Cravinho (Bellow Falls, Vt.) added four shots herself. The Cougars maintained a 14-7 lead in shots throughout the game.
- The five-game winning streak by the Cougars was the longest for the program since a six-game streak during the 2012 season.
The Cougars return to action on Saturday, September 28th as NEWMAC-foe Wheaton travels to Worcester for a 1:30 pm. matchup.
