-The Lead: In a game that saw a total of 14 ties and six lead changes, the Bears of Coast Guard Academy stole a 105-99 overtime victory over the Clark University men's basketball team in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) action on Wednesday evening.
HOW IT HAPPENED
-The first 20 minutes were closely contested seeing five ties and a pair of lead changes. Clark took an early 4-0 lead when sophomore Tyler Davern (Webster, Mass.) dished the ball to the top of the arc where first year Antonio Lapeyrolerie (Plano, Texas) was to knock down at three-pointer. The Bears took their first lead when junior Packy Witkowski (Melrose, Mass.) sank a three at the 16:57 mark (9-8). Coast Guard climbed to a five-point lead when junior Noah Baldez (Lower Gwynedd, Penn.) found room behind the arc and his classmate Justin Kane (Arnold, Md.) made his way through the paint for two with 12:41 on the clock (20-15). Clark was able to tie it back up when junior Brendan Kittredge (Clinton, Mass.) muscled his way to the basket for two and first year Joel Arteaga (Wyncote, Penn.) finished a three-point play with a made free-throw at the 11:22 mark (20-20). The Bears led by as many as 13 in the first half before the Cougars closed the gap to nine heading into the break (48-39).
-Arteaga led Clark with nine points through the first half while Davern and Biko Gayman (Fort Pierce, Fla.) added eight points each. Witkowski led the Bears with 11 points in the first 20 minutes while senior Nolan Benson (Lexington, N.C.) added 10.
-A three-pointer from Davern and a dunk from Lapeyrolerie assisted by Gayman sparked a rally for the Cougars at the start of the second half. Clark used seven points from Davern in the first seven minutes to reclaim the lead at the 13:44 mark (61-58). The hosts pulled ahead by five with 9:25 to play when sophomore Anthony Grzembski (Webster, Mass.) put up four points in under 20 seconds with a layup and a pair of free-throws (69-64). Coast Guard tied the game at 72 apiece when Baldez found his way to the hoop at the 7:05 mark. After Clark was able to pull ahead by seven, Witkowski hit back-to-back three pointers with under a minute to play to bring the Bears back within one (88-87). Benson got the last shot off in regulation as his move to the basket tied the game at 91-91 to send the two teams into an overtime period.
-The Bears outshot the Cougars 14-8 in overtime to claim the 105-99 final victory.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
-Davern led Clark in scoring with 27 points to go along with eight rebounds. Kittredge added 18 points, Lapeyrolerie put up 15, Gayman chipped in with 14 and Arteaga rounded out double-digit scoring with 13 points.
-Witkowski led all players with 29 points to lift Coast Guard to victory. Baldez put up 21 points and Benson added 20 for the Bears.
-Coast Guard shot 52.8% from the field whole Clark shot 49.3%.
-Clark outrebounded the Bears 42-32.
-The Cougars shot 82.4% at the free-throw line (28-for-34) while the Bears shot 65.4% from the charity stripe (17-for-26).
-Clark is back at home on Saturday, January 19th for a NEWMAC contest with Worcester City rival, WPI at 3:00 p.m. The Cougars will celebrate senior day prior to the game.
-Coast Guard will host Springfield College in conference action at 1:00 p.m.
