-The Lead: In their season opener on Friday evening, the Clark University men's soccer team functioned as a scoring machine with four goals in each half of an 8-1 victory over the Spartans of Castleton State University. Junior Jonathan Guilherme (Oxford, Conn.) kicked off the season with a team leading three goals in the victory.
HOW IT HAPPENED
-Clark set the pace of the game just under four minutes into play when junior Sean Munroe (Silver Spring, Md.) tallied his first goal of the season for the 1-0 advantage. They extended their lead to 2-0 on a tally from Guilherme that was tipped off of a Spartan defender at the 32 minute mark.
-Castleton chimed in after Clark goalkeeper Melvin Vincent (Rochester, Mass.) made a stop that Colby Gay (Milton, Vt.) scooped up and passed off to Seraphin Iradukunda (Burlington, Vt.) for the rebound goal (2-1). The Cougars responded quickly with a first year duo of Alex Maiorano (Shrewsbury, Mass.) feeding the ball to Brian Brennan (Stoneham, Mass.) who notched his first Collegiate goal to put Clark ahead 3-1.
-With nine minutes remaining in the first half the Cougars extended their lead to three when sophomore Cooper Richards (Wellesley, Mass.) found junior Charlie Lane (Southborough, Mass.) who buried it behind the Spartan's keeper for the 4-1 lead. Melvin made his fifth save of the half with just two minutes left on the clock to help Clark hold onto the three-goal advantage heading into halftime.
-Castleton controlled the ball first in the second half and got an early shot off that was turned aside with a diving save by Vincent. Clark earned control back and carried the ball to the other end where junior Trevor Sheridan (Massapequa Park, N.Y.) was able to connect with Guilherme for his second goal of the game and the 5-1 advantage. Less than five minutes later Guilherme drove in a third goal to put Clark ahead by five (6-1).
-With just 10 minutes off the clock Castleton nearly knocked one in on a corner kick play, but Vincent's fingertips tipped the ball over the crossbar to keep the game at 4-1. The Cougars kept the scoring going when first year, Derek Jones (Westford, Mass.) tallied his first collegiate goal on a feed from Lane (7-1). With just over three minutes remaining Clark found their way back in the Spartan's defensive end and this time it was Maiorano who notched his first collegiate goal on an assist from Brennan, giving the Cougars the ultimate 8-1 victory.
