-The Lead: The Clark University softball team split with the Pioneers of Smith College in two New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) games on Saturday afternoon. Senior Sami West (Gonic, N.H.) had a great day on the mound for Clark earning the win in game one, recording seven strikeouts over seven innings pitched.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Game #1: Clark 7, Smith 2
-The Cougars got on the board in the top of the second with an RBI from sophomore Sarah Woods (Littleton, Mass.) that scored her classmate Christina Kopacz (North Grosvenordale, Conn.) (1-0). Senior Leah Bodin (Andover, Vt.) doubled to left field in the top of the third and Anjelica Gonzalez (Merrimack, N.H.) tallied an RBI when Bodin crossed home for the 2-0 lead. Three more runs in the top of the fifth including a two RBI double to left from freshman Jessica Urella (North Grafton, Mass.) and an RBI double to center from West put the Cougars up 5-0. Clark finished scoring with two more runs on RBIs from first years Emily Vincent (North Grosvenordale, Conn.) and Francesca Cocca (Tewksbury, Mass.) in the sixth for the 7-0 advantage.
-After six scoreless innings the Pioneers were able to post two runs in the seventh, but Clark held them off for the 7-2 victory.
-West earned the victory going all seven innings, recording seven strikeouts and allowing zero earned runs on 32 batters faced. She improves to 3-2 this season.
-Urella led the Cougars with a 1-for-2 day at the plate, two RBIs and one run scored.
Game #2: Smith 6, Clark 0
-Smith scored two runs in the bottom of the third inning when Rachael Newhall (Riverside, Calif.) earned two RBIs on a single to right field that scored Stephanie Konas (Glenmont, N.Y.) and Melanie Regan (West Islip, N.Y.). They scored four more in the bottom of the fifth on RBIs from Elodie Townsend (Mill Valley, Claif.), Tyler Feeney (Merrimac, Mass.), Alyssa Pioggia (East Longmeadow, Mass.) and Megan McGrath (Wayne, Penn.) for the final 6-0 victory.
-Bodin, Kopacz and Cocca all reacorded hits for Clark. Senior Brenna Foley (Charlton, Mass.) took the loss on the mound pitching 4.1 innings and striking out one batter. She drops to 2-5 on the season.
-Newhall led the Pioneers going 3-for-4 at the plate with two RBIs and a run scored. Jerrica Flohr (Foster City, Calif.) earned the win pitching all seven innings, allowing just three hits and no runs scored.
-Smith travels to Westfield State on Tuesday, April 3rd for a double header starting at 3:30 p.m.
-Clark hosts Worcester State on the same day for two non-conference games starting at 3:00 p.m.
