BOSTON, Mass. – Clark University women's volleyball were topped by Emerson College on Tuesday night, as the Cougars were defeated in straight sets by the surging Lions in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) affair at the Brown & Plofker Gym.
Score: Lions 3, Cougars 0 (25-18, 25-16, 25-17)
Records: Clark University (4-13, 0-5 NEWMAC) | Emerson College (10-4, 3-2 NEWMAC)
How it Happened:
Sophia Torino (Los Angeles, Calif.) delivered 21 assists on the 24 kills from the Cougars while libero Marimo Oka (Fukuoka, Japan) tied for a game-high 13 digs in the conference setback that saw the Lions hit their stride early in the match.
With a 5-0 deficit to start the first set, Claudia Rivera (Guaynabo, P.R.) registered three straight points off kills to close the gap for the Cougars, all coming off assists by Torino. Later in the set, while trailing 22-13, Clark manufactured its longest streak of the set with five straight points as a pair of aces from Bailey Vogel (Salt Lake City, UT.) sparked the run. Emerson was able to hold off the charge from the Cougars with Grace Tepper paving the way with eight of her game-high 14 kills coming in the 25-18 set win.
Emerson came out strong in the second set to take a 6-0 lead and was able to grab points in bunches once again to open it up. But Torino was dialed in for the Cougars, assisting on all five kills in the frame by her team before firing one off herself to shrink the gap, 22-12. The kill sparked a run of five-straight points from Clark before ultimately falling 25-16.
The Lions won eight of the first ten points in the third set of the night as Caroline Bond - who finished with a game-high 36 assists - produced four kills to get it going and add an extra layer to the Lions attack. Clark was able to put together another spirted run midway through the frame, but Emerson's well-balanced attack allowed it to seal the match with the 25-17 set score.
Clark University is back in action on Friday, October 4 when it takes on Bridgewater State at the Kneller Athletic Center for a 6:00 pm match.
